Learn How The Freedom Bed™ Helps Reduce Complications Of Progressive Immobility for Those with ALS
ALS presents unique caregiving challenges as motor function progressively declines while cognitive awareness typically remains intact, creating a situation where individuals fully understand their positioning needs but cannot act on them independently. The Freedom Bed™ provides crucial support throughout the ALS journey, adapting to evolving needs from early mobility challenges through complete dependence, ensuring comfort, dignity, and therapeutic positioning at every stage.
As ALS progressively affects motor neurons controlling voluntary movement, individuals experience increasing difficulty with repositioning that eventually leads to complete immobility, often while maintaining full sensory perception and awareness. This creates particular vulnerability to pressure injuries, respiratory complications, and positioning discomfort that can significantly impact quality of life during precious time with family. The bed’s automated positioning system addresses these challenges by providing gentle, consistent repositioning that prevents complications while preserving energy for communication and meaningful interactions. The Freedom Bed™ is compatible with ventilators, feeding tubes, and other medical equipment for continuous support as respiratory and nutritional needs evolve, eliminating concerns about equipment conflicts that could compromise care.
Families affected by ALS consistently report that the Freedom Bed™ makes the critical difference in maintaining home care throughout the disease progression, avoiding the emotional trauma and financial burden of institutional placement. The bed’s voice control capabilities prove invaluable as hand function declines, allowing individuals to maintain autonomy over their comfort even in advanced stages when traditional controls become impossible to use.
Common complications associated with immobility include:
The Freedom Bed™ is an advanced computer-controlled lateral rotation therapy system specifically designed to accommodate the complex and evolving needs of individuals with ALS throughout their entire journey. This specialized therapy bed features programmable positioning that can be adjusted as the condition progresses, sophisticated safety systems that work seamlessly with ventilators and BiPAP machines, and adaptive control options, including voice commands, that remain accessible even when all voluntary movement is lost.
The Freedom Bed™ automatically provides therapeutic repositioning throughout the day and night, following customized schedules that can be modified as ALS progresses and positioning needs change. In early stages, the bed supplements remaining voluntary movement with gentle assistance, helping individuals achieve comfortable positions they can no longer attain independently. As the disease advances, the system takes over complete repositioning responsibility, rotating the user through predetermined angles that prevent pressure injuries, promote respiratory drainage, and maintain joint flexibility. The bed's precise control allows for subtle adjustments that address the muscle cramping and discomfort common in ALS, while the voice control system responds to simple commands even when speech becomes difficult, ensuring individuals maintain some control over their positioning regardless of physical limitations.
The Freedom Bed™ significantly improves quality of life for individuals with ALS by preventing the painful pressure injuries that can develop rapidly when voluntary movement is lost. The regular position changes also help maintain respiratory function that becomes increasingly critical as breathing muscles weaken. By automating nighttime repositioning, the bed allows both individuals and family caregivers to sleep through the night, preserving energy and emotional resources for daytime interactions and essential care activities.
It has been almost a year since I got my Freedom Bed. The muscles in my arms and legs are very weak, and I am unable to turn myself in the bed. The bed rotates in a lateral direction, keeping me from having an attendant do this during the day and night. "The angle of rotation and the frequency of rotation can be programmed according to the needs of the patient. In spite of its functionality, the Freedom Bed is very attractive and does not look like a hospital bed. I would recommend the Freedom Bed for any patient."

"Following a massive stroke, my mother used the Freedom Bed by ProBed for 14 months before passing away from cardiac issues. She was largely bed bound during this time and the Freedom Bed worked flawlessly. While using the bed she suffered no bed or pressure sores. In fact, the only issue we had in this regard was when she was in the hospital, away from her Freedom Bed. The company is very hands-on, starting with a comprehensive, in-person instructions, and her caregivers had no problems learning how to use and operate the bed. Likewise my mother had no issues adjusting to the slow movement of the bed while she slept. The product is really only surpassed by the excellent customer service. ProBed was there for any questions, any time of the day, even in the middle of the night. Two thumbs up, or five stars as they say. The product really helped our family during a difficult period."

"I'm writing to tell you how your wonderful Freedom Bed has improved our lives. Ryan hasn't had pneumonia in 18 months and no new pressure sores. His skin is healthy and he is comfortable. His lungs are clear and he and he now has enough strength to blow out a candle. As an 11-year-old Quad with a rare disorder and multiple past surgeries, Ryan was either getting sick, or getting over being sick but his Freedom Bed changed all that. His doctors are, of course, pleased, and I must say that they are also quite impressed at the difference Ryan's bed has made in his health in the 18 months he has had it. The quality of this bed is also remarkable it hasn't needed any service or repair and is easy to operate. And I also like how it looks in his bedroom - no "Institutional Look" here! Thank you so much! We would recommend the Freedom Bed to anyone!"
